Joćo Manuel R. S. Tavares is graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Porto (UP www.up.pt), Portugal, since 1992. In 1995, he obtained the Master degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering, in the field of Industrial Informatics, also at University of Porto. In 2001, he obtained the PhD degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the same University.
Since 2001, he has been senior researcher and project coordinator at the Laboratory of Optical and Experimental Mechanics (LOME) of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management (INEGI www.inegi.up.pt). Furthermore, also since 2001, he has been Assistant Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEMec) of the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP www.fe.up.pt).
His main research areas include Computational Vision, Image Processing and Analysis, Computational Mechanics, Scientific Visualization, Human-Computer Interaction and New Product Development.
He has been supervisor and co-supervisor of several Master and PhD Thesis. He is co-author of more than 200 papers in national and international journals and conferences, and co-editor of five international books and guest-editor of several special issues of international journals. He has been evolved in several projects, both as researcher and as scientific coordinator.
He has been co-chair of some international conferences, such as CompIMAGE 2006/2010, VipIMAGE 2007/2009, EUROMEDIA 2008, BioDENTAL 2009, IMAGAPP 2009 and TMSi 6, and of several mini-symposia, workshops and thematic sessions. In addition, he has been member of program, scientific and organizing committees of several national and international conferences.
He has been associate editor of the EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing, Network Protocols and Algorithm, Electronic Letters on Computer Vision and Image Analysis, Journal of Universal Computer Science and of the Journal of Computer Science. Additionally, he has been serving as reviewer of several national and international journals, such as the Pattern Recognition, Finite Elements in Analysis and Design, Journal of Biomechanics, Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering, Computer & Graphics and Strain: An International Journal for Experimental Mechanics.
