ABOUT Dr. Chandra Sekhar Gahan

Dr. Chandra Sekhar Gahan is currently a Senior Researcher/Senior Research Scientist at Industrial Materials Research Department of Mineral Resource Research Division in the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), Daejeon, Korea (South) since March 2011. Before joining here in South Korea, He was working as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at University of Cape Town in the Centre for Bioprocess Engineering and Research at Department of Chemical Engineering. He has also worked as a post doctoral research fellow at Lulea University of Technology, Lulea, Sweden for a short time immediately after he finished his Ph.D degree from the same Lulea University of Technology in the subject of Process Metallurgy. Before starting his PhD studies he worked as a Project Assistant at Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (Previously Regional Research Laboratory), Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India after finishing his M.Sc degree in Applied and Industrial Microbiology (Now changed to Applied Microbiology) at School of Life Sciences, Utkal University, where he topped the merit list among all the postgraduate students in his batch and secured first class first position in the University for the year 2003. He completed his B.Sc Honours degree in Chemistry, Botany and Zoology, where Zoology was his Honours subject. His main research areas include Biohydrometallurgy and Biomineral processing for metal extraction/Industrial waste recycling using Biological and Hydrometallurgical application of industrial wastes together with fundamental and applied Microbiology. He has been closely involved in many R&D and industrial research projects since last 8 years. He has worked on Council of Scientific Industrial Research (CSIR), India in network projects on “Biomineral processing for extraction of metal values from ores, concentrates and wastes” where he has worked on beneficiation of iron ore slimes, and heap bioleaching of chalcopyrite low grade ores together with oxidic uranium ore bioleaching as well. He was also actively involved in the Eurpoean Union ( EU) integrated project BioMinE, project entitled “Bioleaching and sustainable exploitation of wastes” and “Bioleaching of Ores & Concentrates” at Lulea University of Technology for 2 years 8 months. During the period of research in EU project he was involved in investigating to recycling options of using Industrial oxidic by-products generated from Swedish Industries like steel slags, Incinerated ashes, steel dust and Lime sludge generated from paper and pulp industry as neutralising agent to replace the conventionally used lime stone and generate some cost savings to the bioleaching industry and land filling of the industrial by-products together with conservation of virgin limestone deposits. During his whole research until now he has the credit of presenting various research articles at both National and International conferences and Symposia and successfully published 32 research articles, which comprises of 12 in International SCI rated journals (with a total impact factor of 27 and average impact factor of 3 and h-index of 3), 17 in conference proceedings volumes and 3 chapters in edited book with over 30 citations. He is also active Reviewer in 5 Inrenational Journals •Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy Review, Taylor and Francis Group. •Journal of Chemical Technology & Biotechnology, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. •Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, © W. S. Maney & Son Ltd •Hydrometallurgy, Elsevier •International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation, Elsevier Apart from the academic research he has been actively involved with several consultancy projects on leaching of Black shale, copper concentrate and has worked on Industrial projects in close association with Boliden Mineral AB, Sweden. He has also received 2-3 Academic and Scientific awards during his career. He is currently working on the bioleaching of spent petroleum catalyst and Microbial desulphurisation of the coal
